Putting Safety First!

Sometimes when you’re out having fun on the water it’s easy to forget just how important safety is. But if you remember to put safety first, the fun can last forever.

So don’t forget…

A person, who operates any form of power craft on the water, must have a valid Marine licence.

To be eligible for a Marine license, you have to pass a test, which verifies that you, the operator, are aware of “the rules of the road” in regards to the safe operation of water craft.

Some operators of vessels/craft appear to disregard their responsibilities after obtaining their license.

Every year there are incidents that occur on the water, that, unfortunately lead to loss of life, or serious injury, both to the operators of those vessels / craft and worse, innocent bystanders.

By far the biggest breaches to these rules, seem to be:

•        Exceeding the speed limit (5kts) within the 200m zone from shore

•        Exceeding the speed limit (5kts) within 50m of swimmers

•        Exceeding the speed limit (5kts) within 100m of divers

•        Reckless driving or “hooning”, even outside this area

•        Failing to keep a proper watch out when on the water

Every person who operates any form of vessel or watercraft, and their passenger/s are required to “keep a safe look out” while on the water and at all times be alert in pursuing this practice.
